RTÉ News reported January 2012 of the need for Irish exporters to break into the lucrative BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) emerging market …. ‘ The Irish Exporters Association said the value of exports in 2011 was €171 billion, up €8 billion from 2010. But the IEA said the outlook for 2012 was for more sluggish growth of 3% in total exports. It also expressed concern about the “limited success” of Irish firms so far in the rapidly growing BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) markets. The association said these countries accounted for only 4% of Irish exports. The IEA said Ireland was already “playing catch-up” with most of its competitors in these markets, adding that a comprehensive re-think of Government strategy was needed to help exporters to the BRICs. Growth in Irish exports to BRIC countries last year was 5%, but EU27 members’ exports to these countries jumped by 22.5%. IEA chief executive John Whelan also warned that the UK and euro zone combined accounted for 56% of Irish exports, and possible recessions in both over the next 12 months would reduce demand for Irish goods and services….’
